Rubio Statement Ahead of Italian Prime Minister Meloni’s Official Visit to the U.S.

Feb 29, 2024 | Press Releases

On March 1, 2024, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will make her second official visit to the United States. Ahead of this occasion, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued a statement highlighting the need to maintain and strengthen U.S.-Italy relations.

  • “Once again, I welcome Prime Minister Meloni to the United States and wish her a productive visit. Her government deserves our nation’s firm support because she has been a strong ally in the face of common threats.
  • “Prime Minister Meloni has resisted tyrannical regimes, arming Ukraine to withstand Vladimir Putin’s unjustified invasion and withdrawing Italy from China’s exploitative Belt and Road Initiative. She has also resisted tyrannical ideologies, defending common-sense views of national sovereignty, human sexuality, and the right to life against left-wing fanatics. In short, she has been a model of pro-freedom governance to Europe and the world.
  • “I urge the Biden Administration to take every opportunity to help Italy address the root causes of illegal migration from Africa, an issue that is destabilizing both our nations. The United States should also support Italy in resisting economic coercion from China, including by setting up stronger investment screening mechanisms.”
  • “Finally, the United States should encourage Italy to work with other European nations to eliminate imports of slave-made goods from Xinjiang and other regions tainted by forced labor. China’s totalitarianism and modern-day slavery is antithetical to our nations’ time-honored ethical commitments.” – Senator Rubio
