Senator Rubio To Introduce Resolution Honoring Human Rights Leader Vaclav Havel

Dec 22, 2011 | Press Releases

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today announced his intention to introduce a Senate resolution honoring the life and legacy of Vaclav Havel, the late human rights leader and former president of the Czech Republic.  The resolution will be formally filed when the Senate re-convenes.

“Vaclav Havel will always be remembered as one of the most important leaders in human history.  We join our friends in the Czech Republic in mourning his passing, but we should also celebrate an extraordinary life that brought freedom to millions,” said Rubio.  “As we remember his life and legacy, an important way to honor Vaclav Havel is for America to remain a strong advocate of oppressed people all over the world who are being deprived of their fundamental liberties and human rights.”

The Senate resolution pays tribute to Havel’s career as a playwright, internationally respected defender of democratic principles and driving force in promoting democratic reform in communist Czechoslovakia, who was later elected president of the Czech Republic.  In addition, the resolution “reaffirms [the Senate’s] commitment to promote respect for the fundamental principles of freedom, democracy, and human rights where they might be threatened and in accordance to American values.”
