Rubio Welcomes March for Life, Introduces Pro-Life Bill to Protect Minors and Parents’ Right to Know
Washington, D.C. – In advance of Friday’s 44th Annual March For Life in Washington, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) released the following statement today after introducing the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act (CIANA), which would prohibit the transportation of a minor child across a state line to obtain an abortion:
“I believe there is no human right more fundamental and more sacred than the right to life, and that every single human being is entitled to the protection of our laws. Every year scores of men and women visit our National Mall to peacefully march for the rights of people who cannot yet march or speak for themselves, countless babies who have yet to be born. Sadly, since the Supreme Court’s erroneous decision in 1973, the lives of roughly 60 million babies have been terminated, denying them the right to life. It’s a simple fact that the vast majority of these deaths were for reasons that had nothing to do with rape, incest, or the life of the mother being endangered. This is an atrocity, and I pray with those gathering in Washington this week that it ends soon.
“An abortion is a life-altering medical procedure that can have serious and permanent physical and emotional side effects. It’s hard to believe that while a parent’s consent is required for so many things related to their child’s health and well-being, in some cases a loophole in state and federal laws means a minor can obtain an abortion and her parents can be left completely in the dark. This violates a parent’s right to know, and makes it easier for criminals to cover up rape. I’ve introduced this legislation to close this loophole and ensure minors are not transported across state lines to obtain abortions as a way of getting around states’ parental notification laws. This will help protect young girls from harm and empower them to make safe, informed decisions with their parents.”
The Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act (CIANA) includes an exception for an abortion necessary to save the life of the minor.
Rubio also joined his colleagues in introducing the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act this week. The legislation would protect newborns that survive abortions by requiring appropriate care and admission to a hospital.
