Rubio Statement on U.S. Sanctions Targeting Cuban Corporation Aiding Cubametales

Nov 26, 2019 | Press Releases

Miami, FL — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued a statement after the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), pursuant to Executive Order 13850, imposed sanctions against Corporación Panamericana S.A. “for being owned or controlled by, or having acted for or on behalf of, Cubametales.”

Cubametales, a Cuban state-controlled oil import and export company, was sanctioned earlier this year for continuing to illicitly import Venezuelan oil from the Maduro dictatorship.

“As the United States continues to hold accountable enablers of the Venezuelan and Cuban regimes, which continue to violate human rights and undermine democratic order in our region, we must continue to urge our European allies to follow suit,” Rubio said. “By sanctioning this Cuban corporation, America is sending a clear message to deter any companies or individuals from aiding undemocratic regimes in our hemisphere.”

Rubio is the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues.
