Rubio Statement on the Passing of Shimon Peres
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued the following statement today regarding the passing of former Israeli President Shimon Peres:
“My wife Jeanette and I join the Peres family and the people of Israel in mourning the loss of their former President, Shimon Peres. As part of the legendary generation of Israel’s founding fathers, he helped birth a country that has defied history to become not just a homeland for a persecuted people, but also a leading ally of the United States. Shimon Peres’ life was intertwined with Israel’s story, as he served in virtually every position in Israel’s cabinet, from Minister of Immigrant Absorption to Defense Minister and eventually Prime Minister.
“A true leader, Shimon Peres was a Noble Peace Prize laureate who dedicated his life to establishing a Jewish State and protecting the Jewish people in their historical homeland. He fought for a brighter future for the children of Israel, and in addition to seeking peace with the Palestinians, helped negotiate peace with Egypt and Jordan when most believed it was not possible. The Peres Center for Peace will carry on his legacy and continue to inspire future generations to forge a durable peace.
“Shimon Peres’ love for his country was undeniable, and his life is a testament to the strength of the Jewish people. I was honored to have had the opportunity to meet him, and I will never forget his wisdom, grasp of history, and vision for the future.
“His legacy will live on and his memory will be a blessing for generations to come.”
