Rubio Statement on the Administration’s New Sanctions Against Iranian Regime Officials

Jun 24, 2019 | Press Releases

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today issued a statement as the Trump Administration announced new sanctions in response to actions by the Iranian regime and Iran-backed proxies “to destabilize the Middle East, promote international terrorism, and advance Iran’s ballistic missile program, and Iran’s irresponsible and provocative actions in and over international waters, including the targeting of United States military assets and civilian vessels.” The new measures include a new Executive Order to authorize primary sanctions and potentially secondary sanctions against the Iranian Supreme Leader, the Office of the Iranian Supreme Leader (SLO), and other SLO-appointed officials, as well as new Treasury Department sanctions designations to target eight senior commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) naval, aerospace, and ground forces.

”The Administration’s new hard-hitting sanctions not only target Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, his cronies, and IRGC commanders responsible for regional aggression against the U.S. and its partners, but also may imperil foreign banks that engage in significant transactions or financial services with sanctioned Iranian officials and entities,” Rubio said. “The Iranian people continue to suffer under the regime in Tehran’s criminal corruption, massive economic mismanagement and systemic human rights abuses, in addition to its support for terrorists, the murderous Assad regime, ballistic missile aggression, nuclear misbehavior, and regional aggression.”

Rubio is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, and Majority Administrative Cochairman of the Senate National Security Working Group.
