Rubio Secures Provision in Defense Bill to Better Manage Coast Guard Assets
Miami, FL — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) secured a provision in the Senate-passed Fiscal Year 2021 National Defense Authorization Act that will help the U.S. Coast Guard to reduce and better manage the maintenance backlog for its vast and aging shore infrastructure assets. The FY21 NDAA includes and builds upon Senator Rubio’s Coast Guard Shore Infrastructure Improvement Act, which he first introduced in July 2019, and which seeks to implement recommendations from a Government Accountability Office report. Improvements are critical to the Coast Guard’s operational mission, as shore infrastructure is unfortunately vulnerable due to past weather events, as well as planning for future natural disasters.
“Florida is proud to host critical Coast Guard personnel and infrastructure, including vital shore infrastructure assets,” Rubio said. “I am pleased that the FY21 NDAA conference report includes my provision to address the Coast Guard’s maintenance backlog. The men and women of the Coast Guard constantly stand ready to protect our nation, and we must ensure the infrastructure they rely on is up to par.”
