Rubio, Scott, DeSantis Travel to Bahamas Following Hurricane Dorian
Miami, FL — U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Rick Scott (R-FL) and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis today traveled to the Bahamas with the United States Coast Guard (USCG). During their visit, the Senators and Governor viewed the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Dorian.
While conducting a brief assessment in Andros Town, Rubio was able to express his gratitude to USCG and Navy personnel for tirelessly working around the clock, who have been instrumental in conducting search and rescue missions and continue to provide critical assistance to those in need.
“The logistical challenges facing the Bahamas are extraordinary. Airports have no power, planes cannot fuel, roads are impassable, and the ports are not safe,” Rubio said. “Only the U.S. military has the logistical capability to do heavy lifts necessary to deliver fuel, medicine, food, and other supplies to islands devastated by Hurricane Dorian. I remain committed to working with my colleagues and the administration to help the Bahamian people in any way we can as they begin the long road to recovery.”
Ahead of their visit, Senators Rubio and Scott urged President Donald Trump to waive or suspend certain visa requirements for Bahamian citizens who have relatives residing in the United States. Rubio also urged Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Mark Green to provide an assessment of all humanitarian assistance readily available for the Bahamas under current accounts, and whether additional funds will be needed for disaster relief.
Rubio is Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues.
