Rubio Renews Call for Bob Levinson’s Immediate Release

Nov 18, 2019 | Press Releases

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued the following statement calling for the immediate release of Florida constituent, Bob Levinson, the longest-held hostage in American history. Last week, President Donald Trump highlighted Levinson’s case after Iran indicated for the first time in over a decade that “he may be in their custody and that authorities are pursuing a case against him.”

“The United States has a moral duty to ensure that every American hostage is brought back home. While Iran finally acknowledged Bob Levinson’s disappearance, the regime in Tehran must take concrete steps to safely return of Levinson and other American hostages held in Iran,” Rubio said. “The United States must continue to pressure the Iranian regime and hold those responsible for Levinson’s disappearance accountable.”

Timeline of Rubio’s Actions in Support of Bob Levinson:

  • On June 24, 2019, Rubio commented on the James W. Foley Foundation’s Bringing Americans Home: The First Non-Governmental Assessment of U.S. Hostage Policy and Family Engagement.
  • On March 7, 2019, Rubio led a bipartisan group of Senators in introducing the Robert Levinson Hostage Recovery and Hostage-taking Accountability Act.
  • On March 9, 2018, Rubio commented on the 11th anniversary of Bob Levinson’s disappearance.
  • On March 12, 2018, Rubio, then-Senator Bill Nelson, and U.S. Congressman Deutch call out Iran for denying commitment to assist with Bob Levinson’s case.
