Rubio Remembers El Faro Crew on First Anniversary of Tragedy
Miami, FL – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued the following statement today regarding the one-year anniversary of the El Faro shipwreck:
“A year ago, 33 families were devastated by the heartbreaking loss of their loved ones aboard the El Faro. This tragedy was not only a blow to these families, it was a loss felt by the entire Jacksonville region and Florida’s shipping community.
“From this disaster, we’ve learned more about how similar tragedies can be prevented from happening in the future. A key part of this process was the successful recovery of the ship’s data recorder, which we hope will provide important information about its final moments.
“But the data recorder also represents an opportunity to get some closure for families hoping to hear their loved ones’ voices one more time. I believe these families deserve the chance to listen to the ship’s voice recordings, and I’m encouraged by TOTE’s recent assurances that the crew members’ relatives will eventually have the opportunity to do so.
“Today is a day of remembrance of the El Faro crew members we lost, and of solidarity with the families and loved ones they left behind. My wife Jeanette and I are thinking of all of them and will keep them in our prayers.”
