Rubio, Nelson Support Governor Scott’s Request for Major Disaster Declaration in Response to Hurricane Irma

Sep 10, 2017 | Press Releases

Miami, FL – U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Bill Nelson (D-FL) today urged President Trump to grant Florida Governor Rick Scott’s request for a federal disaster declaration in response to Hurricane Irma.

The full text of the senators’ letter is below.

Dear Mr. President:

We write in full support of Governor Rick Scott’s request for a major disaster declaration for Hurricane Irma as soon as possible. We must immediately begin to provide assistance to Florida’s impacted communities and people.

Federal government resources are critical in the immediate aftermath of this devastating storm, and coordination between the federal government and state and local officials is crucial to begin the process of recovery and rebuilding. In particular, federal resources will be desperately needed for debris removal in order for emergency officials and volunteers to assist those who are isolated and in need of aid.

Today, the governor requested a major disaster declaration from FEMA. The pre-landfall disaster declaration you signed on September 5, 2017, was instrumental in the state’s preparation for Hurricane Irma, but post-disaster assistance is needed to ensure the safety of Floridians.  We urge you to promptly approve Governor Scott’s request for a major disaster declaration, so the state of Florida may begin its recovery and rebuilding process. Thank you for your consideration of this request.

Sincerely,
