Rubio, Nelson Honor The Life And Legacy Of South Florida’s Georgia Jones Ayers
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Bill Nelson (D-FL) today announced the introduction of a Senate resolution honoring the life and legacy of South Florida community activist Georgia Jones Ayers.
The resolution recognizes the lifelong work of Ayers, who passed away on February 17, 2015, and calls on all Floridians to redouble their commitment to their neighbors and their communities.
“Georgia Jones Ayers dedicated her life to the betterment of those around her,” said Rubio. “Her tireless leadership and commitment inspired generations of progress and forever changed the South Florida community.
“Among her many gifts to our community was the Alternative Program, which she founded with Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Tom Petersen, which helped steer troubled youth away from a life of crime,” added Rubio. “Ms. Jones Ayers understood the importance of guidance and mentorship, and her life’s work has encouraged thousands of people to recognize and achieve their God-given potential. This resolution calls on each of us to honor that legacy by redoubling our commitment to our neighbors and our communities.”
“With the passing of Georgia Jones Ayers, we have lost a fearless community activist,” said Nelson. “Thanks to her efforts, many troubled youth were given a second chance for a better life.”
