Rubio, Menendez Resolution Recognizing Hispanic-Serving Institutions Passes Senate
Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) are degree-granting institutions where total Hispanic enrollment constitutes no less than 25 percent of the total enrollment. HSIs play a critical role in educating young Hispanic-Americans and creating opportunity for the economies in which these institutions are embedded. HSIs are located in 29 states, as well as in the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Florida has 14 HSIs.
As our nation celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month, U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Bob Menendez (D-NJ) led a bipartisan resolution designating the week of September 12, 2022 as “National Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week.” The resolution recognizes the important role of the 559 HSIs across the country that educate and provide professional development opportunities to the next generation of emerging Hispanic leaders. The Senate passed the resolution.
The resolution is supported by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities.
