Washington, D.C.– U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today issued the following statement marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day:
“On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, we honor the millions of innocent people who were killed in what will forever be remembered as one of the darkest chapters in human history. Today we also honor the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland, where over 1 million people were killed.
“The times I have had the humbling experience of meeting a Holocaust survivor and seeing the concentration camp numbers forever marked on their skin have been a reminder of the debt of gratitude we owe to all those who decided not to repress their painful memories, but instead to share them with younger generations so that the world can try to ensure a human tragedy like the Holocaust never occurs again.
“Today is a particularly solemn day for millions of Jewish people throughout the world, including in the nation of Israel and here at home. For Americans of all faiths, today is yet another reminder that ‘never again’ means standing with our Israeli friends in the face of threats from nations and terrorist organizations committed to their destruction. They are currently enduring Palestinian terrorist attacks against innocent Israelis going about their daily lives. Abroad, Israelis face increasing hostility and discrimination, from Europe to the halls of academia in the United States.
“‘Never again’ also means speaking out about atrocities in our own time, be it the ruthless slaughter of the Syrian people by the Assad government, aided by Russia and Iran, or the genocide that is underway against religious minorities like the Yazidi and Christian communities in Syria and Iraq by the terrorists of ISIS.
“The Holocaust will forever stand as a grave example of the terrifying capabilities of evil and the dangers of absolute power, but it also stands as an emblem of extraordinary resilience and courage and the power of faith, hope and love in surmounting even the worst horrors imaginable. My wife Jeanette and I hold all who perished or were impacted by the Holocaust in our prayers on this solemn day of grief, reflection and remembrance.”
