Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights and Global Women’s Issues, issued the following statement regarding the presidential run-off in Guatemala on Sunday:
“On Sunday, Guatemalans turned out in large numbers, participating in an open and peaceful democratic process and sending a clear message in support of honest and responsive government.
“I congratulate President-elect Jimmy Morales on his run-off victory. Guatemala has been racked by rampant corruption and political upheaval that has seen the resignation of its president, vice president, and multiple other government officials. It is my sincere hope that President-elect Morales will be successful in rooting out corruption inside the government and that he will be able to provide the Guatemalan people with the transparent and effective government they deserve.
“The United States should continue to support democratically elected governments in our hemisphere that are responsive and work to promote the well-being of their people.”
