Rubio Comments On Result Of Colombian Presidential Election

Jun 16, 2014 | Press Releases

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today issued the following statement regarding the re-election of Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos:

“I congratulate the Colombian people on once again conducting a free and fair election that further solidifies the democratic gains they have made in recent decades. I congratulate President Santos on his re-election.

“The U.S. and Colombia have a special bond for which much has been sacrificed in order to achieve the level of prosperity and security that the Colombian people enjoy today. What we have is a great foundation to continue building on. In the coming years, continued implementation of the U.S.-Colombia free trade agreement will offer new economic opportunities for both our countries. We must continue our cooperation on counter-terrorism efforts and help Colombia become an exporter of such expertise to other nations in the region facing threats from narco-terrorist groups. We must also stand up for democracy and human rights in the Western Hemisphere, especially as they are assaulted in Venezuela and Cuba.

“In Florida, we have a large and vibrant Colombian-American community that cares deeply about events in Colombia. This includes within my own household and family. As Florida’s senator, I look forward to doing all I can to ensure the U.S. government rightly prioritizes our relationship with this valued friend and partner.”
