Rubio Comments On President Obama’s Budget Proposal

Feb 2, 2015 | Press Releases

Washington, D.C. U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today issued the following statement regarding President Obama’s fiscal year 2016 budget proposal:

“President Obama’s budget proposal is not a serious attempt at presidential leadership. If it ever became reality, this budget would make the American Dream harder to achieve by spending more on ineffective big government, raising taxes on America’s savers and job creators, and saddling future generations with an additional $8.5 trillion in debt.

“President Obama’s plan provides no hope of balancing the budget, no plan to save Social Security or Medicare, and no realistic ideas to grow the private economy or create jobs. It does, however, burden business owners with taxes that would lead to a loss of jobs, threaten our ability to compete in the global economy, and place an ineffective and unaccountable federal government at the center of the American economy.

“While I’m glad President Obama is finally beginning to realize that we need to invest more in our national defense, his proposed increase is not enough to undo the significant damage that sequestration is having on our military readiness and capabilities. Defense spending should be prioritized in our budget and allocated irrespective of non-defense discretionary spending.

“The fantasies underlying President Obama’s budget reveal the devastating extent of his misunderstanding of basic economics. This president believes politicians create jobs rather than private citizens. He believes the government can spend its way out of financial trouble. He believes the way to help struggling Americans climb up the economic ladder is to pull others down.

“I have proposed a plan to save the American Dream that is a free market alternative to this president’s big government fantasy. My plan would reform our anti-poverty programs to empower the struggling, bring our higher education system within reach of everyone, save our vital entitlement programs, fix our uncompetitive tax code, spur private investment, and grow the American economy the only way it can be grown: by unleashing the unparalleled genius of the American people.”
