Rubio, Colleagues Move to Block Biden Rule on Chinese EV Chargers
Instead of supporting American workers and industry, the Biden Administration’s policies make America more dependent on supply chains controlled by foreign adversaries, including the Chinese Communist Party. For example, a new Federal Highway Administration rule would waive Buy America requirements for Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations purchased using American taxpayer dollars.
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and colleagues introduced a joint resolution, under the Congressional Review Act, to overturn a Biden Administration rule that would send American tax dollars to overseas competitors. The resolution would ensure that American businesses remain at the forefront of EV innovation and manufacturing.
- “Waiving the Buy America requirements on EV chargers won’t help American taxpayers or workers. It hurts American companies and empowers foreign adversaries, like China, to control our energy infrastructure. We should never use American dollars to subsidize Chinese-made products.” – Senator Rubio
Joining Rubio were U.S. Senators Roger Marshall (R-KS), Rick Scott (R-FL), and Kevin Cramer (R-ND).
- “Congress mandated the Buy America requirements for a reason, to bring jobs and manufacturing back to the United States and reduce our dependence on China. Waiving this requirement is a step in the wrong direction and a complete and total backtrack on Biden’s pledge to prioritize the reshoring of critical supply chains. I support Senator Rubio’s CRA to stop this from taking place and call on President Biden to support American workers by fully implementing the bi-partisan Buy America requirements.” – Senator Marshall
- “It’s absolutely absurd that the Biden administration would go out of its way to allow companies to receive U.S. taxpayer dollars with no requirement that it be spent or used in the United States. To build up U.S. manufacturing in an industry dominated by our adversaries like Communist China, we have to stop propping up manufacturing abroad, especially using tax dollars. It’s that simple.” – Senator Scott
- “The Biden administration’s attempted Buy America waiver for electric vehicle chargers is a joke. They tout domestic sourcing requirements, but they make a loophole to push their EV agenda. Our CRA will hold the administration accountable and prioritize secure supply chains over EV pipe dreams.” – Senator Cramer
Flashback.… Last year, Rubio warned the so-called Inflation Reduction Act would end up subsidizing Chinese businesses. “Democrats believe America cannot go green without Beijing,” Rubio wrote. “And China’s domination of these key industries means Chinese companies—not American businesses—will benefit from the new incentives.
Looking forward.… The joint resolution, introduced as a resolution of disapproval under the Congressional Review Act, will come up for a Senate vote before the end of the calendar year.
