Rubio Answers Constituent’s Question on the Free Enterprise System
Washington, D.C. – In today’s installment of Marco’s Constituent Mailbox video series, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio responds to a letter from Jeffret, a Florida constituent living in Delray Beach. Jeffret wrote to Rubio concerned about the heated rhetoric and lack of action in Washington to protect our free enterprise system. In his letter, Jeffret urged members of Congress to “actually work” to protect and grow the American free enterprise system.
In responding to Jeffret’s letter, Rubio said, “Certainly government has a role to play. It has to build infrastructure. It has to enforce rules. It has to have an education system. It has to provide for the national security. All of these things are important for the free enterprise system to work. But after that, the rest belongs to the free enterprise system. The truth is that the way jobs and opportunity are created is when someone who has made money, takes that money, and uses it to start a new business or to grow an existing business. That’s how opportunity and prosperity is created.”
Rubio explained the need for market predictability by comparing the marketplace to a baseball game. “Imagine, for example, if you were in a baseball game and in that baseball game they decided that in the first two innings one run is worth one run. But all of a sudden they decided, ‘No, no. We are going to change the rules. From now on every run is worth two runs.’ But in the fourth inning they decide, ‘Well maybe not. It is only worth one and a half.’ You would go crazy,” Rubio continued. “It creates unpredictability. It’s the same in the economy. When people don’t know what the rules are going to be, or when the rules are constantly being changed and adapted, people decide, ‘Well maybe I’ll just hold off on investing until it’s clearer what tomorrow’s going to look like.’”
A strong American free market, Rubio said, “starts by having leadership that believes and understands, not just believes, but understands how the free enterprise system works. That’s what I’m for. And I’ll continue to do anything I can to reform our tax code, to reform our regulatory code, to have a pro-American, pro-economic growth energy policy. These are the sorts of things that we need in order to get our country moving forward. I spend all day trying to move those issues forward. Sadly, the Senate leadership has decided they don’t want to vote on real issues until after the election. I think that’s unfortunate, but I’ll keep trying.”
Each week, Senator Rubio receives thousands of letters, emails and phone calls from Floridians voicing their opinions. Through this video series, Rubio regularly responds to a selection of constituent letters on various topics.
