Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) Acting Chairman Marco Rubio (R-FL) released a statement after he spoke on the Senate floor regarding Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) obstruction of Senate committee business, including an SSCI scheduled briefing with the Director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center (NCSC) Bill Evanina.
“Just a short time ago, Democratic leaders demanded more briefings on election interference,” Acting Chairman Rubio said. “The Senate Intelligence Committee was scheduled to have a briefing today with Director Evanina, who leads our nation’s election security efforts. However, Senator Schumer had a temper tantrum over the Supreme Court and used a procedural move to cancel the Committee’s briefing.”
Earlier today, Acting Chairman Rubio spoke on the Senate floor to request unanimous consent that SSCI’s scheduled briefing with NCSC Director Evanina be allowed to take place. Minority Leader Schumer invoked the Senate’s “two-hour rule” to object to the SSCI scheduled briefing, effectively canceling it and preventing the Committee from meeting.
Rubio: Mr. President, I ask unanimous consent that the Intelligence Committee be authorized to meet today with the Director of National Counterintelligence, who is also leading the election security efforts on behalf of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, that that meeting occurred during today’s session of the Senate?
Schumer: Reserving the right to object because the Senate Republicans have no respect for the institution, we won’t have business as usual here in the Senate. I object.
Rubio: Mr. President if I may, just for a moment, just for the information of the members then who are on the committee, we will not be having the meeting — the hearing — today on the issue of election security with the person leading that effort. It’s a priority of many here. We are scheduled to have the director of National Intelligence tomorrow to discuss that, and many more topics of great importance that I know a lot of people here have been saying we need to be having briefings over. And I hope that, if in fact the Democratic Leader intends to object to that, that we should know that today as well, I hope, so that the members will know that and make arrangements accordingly. I yield the floor.
