Rubio Praises New Treasury Sanctions on Iran-Backed Hizballah Operatives for Supporting Terrorism
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today issued a statement after the U.S. Treasury Department announced new sanctions against three senior operatives of Iran-backed Hizballah, a U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO), for providing material support for terrorism to Hizballah and advancing the Iranian regime’s malign agenda. The new sanctions, pursuant to Executive Order 13224, target two Hizballah Members of Lebanon’s Parliament, Amin Sherri and Muhammad Hasan Ra’d, as well as Hizballah security official Wafiq Safa.
“The Treasury Department’s new sanctions against Hizballah operatives reaffirm America’s strong commitment to countering Iran-backed Hizballah, a terrorist group that poses grave dangers to the U.S., Israel, and other allies,” Rubio said. “It’s critical for the U.S. to hold accountable Hizballah terrorists and their enablers, who not only continue to threaten the security and stability of Lebanon, Israel, and the wider Middle East, but also are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Americans, including the 241 Americans murdered in the Beirut Marine Barracks bombing on October 23, 1983.”
Senator Rubio authored the 2018 sanctions law, the Hizballah International Financing Prevention Amendments Act (Public Law 115-272), with Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Banking Committee Chairman Mike Crapo (R-ID), and Banking Committee Ranking Member Sherrod Brown (D-OH). Rubio also co-authored the 2015 law, the Hizballah International Financing Prevention Act (Public Law 114-102).
