Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today met with Puerto Rico House of Representatives Minority Leader Jenniffer Gonzalez to discuss congressional efforts to combat the Zika virus, strengthen the Puerto Rican economy, and other issues affecting the four million U.S. citizens who live on the island.

“I had a great conversation with Minority Leader Gonzalez and appreciate her visit to Washington,” said Rubio. “It is important for me to hear from Puerto Rican leaders from across the political spectrum, and her insights will help inform my work as a member of the Congressional Puerto Rico Economic Growth Task Force. As I said last week, Congress will play a critical role in helping Puerto Rico achieve fiscal stability and prosperity. Ultimately, however, the island’s economic future is in the hands of the Puerto Rican people and their leaders.

“Minority Leader Gonzalez and I also had a productive conversation on my efforts in Congress to fund the fight against Zika,” Rubio continued. “No other region of the United States has suffered from the Zika outbreak like Puerto Rico has. I reiterated to Minority Leader Gonzalez my commitment to being a voice in the Senate for the people of Puerto Rico, and doing everything possible to ensure our health officials and experts have the resources they need to combat Zika and develop a vaccine.”

Last week, Rubio and U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo (FL-26) introduced the Territory Health Insurance Tax Relief Act, which would provide relief to the U.S. territories where the annual fee on health insurance providers is imposed without regard to the way they are treated under other provisions of the law.

In July, Rubio was named to the Congressional Puerto Rico Economic Growth Task Force, which will issue a report by December 31, 2016, identifying impediments to growth and recommending reforms that will promote long-term economic growth and stability, spur new job creation, reduce child poverty, and attract investment to the territory.
