PHOTO: English/Español: Rubio Meets with President Lasso in Guayaquil
As Latin America and the Caribbean turn towards left-leaning anti-American governments, Ecuador remains an important strategic ally for our nation and the stability of the region.
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) met with Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso, as well as members of his cabinet and the U.S. Embassy, where they discussed mutual security interests, the importance of economic ties between our countries, and efforts to help fight corruption as Ecuador faces many challenges.
In December of last year, Rubio welcomed the inclusion of his bipartisan United States-Ecuador Partnership Act of 2022 in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2023. The bill, co-led by Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) and Jim Risch (R-ID), requires a comprehensive diplomatic strategy to strengthen U.S.-Ecuador cooperation on issues of mutual interest, including strengthening democratic institutions, promoting inclusive economic growth, supporting conservation initiatives, and expanding capabilities to address corruption, crime, and malign foreign influence.
