In Weekly Video Series, Rubio Opposes President Obama’s Class Warfare Tax Proposal

Jul 25, 2012 | Blog

Washington, D.C. – In this week’s installment of Marco’s Constituent Mail Box video series, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio responds to constituents regarding the catastrophic consequences of Democrat tax proposals and the need for fundamental tax reform. This latest video comes as Rubio today voted against a Senate Democrat proposal to raise taxes on individuals and small businesses.

Rubio: “We know that the Obama tax increase will cost 700,000 jobs. We know the Obama tax increase will keep hundreds of thousands of other jobs from being created. We know the Obama tax increase will even put some people out of business. Those are all the bad things about it. Now what are the good things about it? There aren’t any. In fact, it barely even makes a dent on the deficit or the debt.  It’s not even noticeable. So why are they doing this? Why are they proposing this? Why are they proposing a tax increase that will hurt the economy and do nothing to solve the debt? The answer is class warfare. The answer is this idea that, ‘Let’s pit Americans against each other. Let’s go to people out there who are hurting and convince them that the reason why they’re not doing well is because other people are doing too well. Let’s go out there and try to convince people that the way to make their lives better is to make someone else’s life tougher.’ That’s never been who we are as a country. That’s never been the American way. And that’s why I reject the Obama tax increases.

“When people talk to you about continuing the Bush tax cuts, what they’re really talking about is continuing the current tax rate right now. The tax rate that we have in place right now should be continued. And every study shows that unless we do that, the economy is going to see a downturn beginning early next year and, in fact, in the last part of this year. And we certainly can’t afford to make the downturn we’re already experiencing even worse. So that’s why I oppose it. And instead, I support not just making these tax rates permanent, but real tax reform that simplifies the tax code, that stops punishing companies for doing business in America and encouraging them to take jobs overseas. These are the sorts of things we’re working on.”
