[T]he Biden Administration has ceased monitoring Colombian coca crops by satellite for the first time in decades. This makes no practical sense, because Colombia’s illegal coca industry is actively expanding. But it’s sure to please [Colombian President Gustavo] Petro….
Petro seeks to appease the cartels as part of a doomed gamble to bring them, as well as designated foreign terrorist groups like the National Liberation Army (ELN), to negotiate a “total peace.” President Biden, in turn, seeks to appease Petro to satisfy progressive activists and the socialist sympathizers….
This is a huge—and hugely unwarranted—departure from the status quo. Between 2000 and 2020, the U.S. invested more than $10 billion to help the Colombian government bring down drug dealers and terrorists….
Appeasement, on the other hand, threatens instability and insecurity. Cartels and terrorists take advantage of soft-on-crime policies not to cease fighting, but to enrich themselves. They are aided in this by Petro’s taxation scheme, which is tanking the national economy….
In response, the U.S. should resume satellite coca crop monitoring. We should also condition foreign aid to Colombia on its government’s resumption of the full range of coca elimination tactics, including the application of aerosolized herbicides.
Petro sympathizers are sure to object. But common-sense Democrats support these measures. They know the alternative is doing nothing, turning a blind eye as violence and crime rise to appease a would-be socialist dictator….
