ICYMI: Ahead Of Hearing, Rubio Discusses Hurricane Forecasting And Preparedness
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), chairman of the Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard, today highlighted the importance of hurricane forecasting and preparedness in an interview with WJNO West Palm Beach’s Joel Malkin.
Today at 2:00 p.m., Rubio will convene a subcommittee hearing titled “Improvements in Hurricane Forecasting and the Path Forward.” The hearing takes place one week prior to the official start of the 2016 hurricane season.
“We’re trying to get some awareness going, both of what the needs are to be able to improve our forecasting, but also to create awareness,” Rubio said. “We haven’t been hit by a hurricane in a while in the mainland United States and in Florida, so there’s a tendency for people to get a little bit complacent about its risks. So we wanted to remind everyone – we are going to have another major hurricane hit the U.S. and hit Florida at some point, whether this year or another year, and we got to be ready.”
Earlier this month, Rubio met with officials at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Florida, to underscore the importance of being prepared for the upcoming hurricane season and to discuss improvements in the tracking and forecasting of storms, as well as storm surges. Earlier this month, Rubio wrote an op-ed in the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that highlights the importance of passing the “Hurricane Forecast Improvement Act of 2015,” legislation he introduced in 2015 that would improve guidance for hurricane track, intensity, and storm surge forecasts.
