Miami, FL –U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) spoke with El Nuevo Día about Puerto Rico’s statehood. In 2018, following the introduction of the Puerto Rico Admission Act of 2018 by Congresswoman Jenniffer González-Colón Senator Rubio said:
“I support the right of our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico to seek admission to the union as a state. I will continue working on our strategy of building support in the Senate and creating the conditions necessary to achieve the 60 votes needed for success.”
Puerto Rico’s Status
“There is a great difference between statehood for Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico, for historical reasons. The country’s founding fathers did not want Washington D.C. to be a state, they didn’t want the home of the federal government to have influence as a state. So that is a very different situation from Puerto Rico’s.
“I do not agree with anyone who says that this [Puerto Rico’s admission as a state] automatically guarantees Puerto Rico will elect a Democrat. Third, there is a difference between a referendum or plebiscite in Puerto Rico. I do not have an opinion on that, that is a local matter and must be decided by the people of Puerto Rico through their elected representatives. …
“What I have said is that currently, the conditions to support that vote in the Senate don’t exist. But that does not mean that it will be a permanent thing. Like everything in life, opinions change, with new information and new facts. It is important that if that’s what the people of Puerto Rico decide, ask to be a state, then we advocate for that position. And I think it would help a lot to be able to say, look, Puerto Rico is recovering economically. Even more, it’s an example of how free enterprise can help through some of the examples we’ve discussed in this interview.
“So it is a subject that must be worked on. It is not something that will occur from one day to the other but I think it is important to be honest: today, on May 27th, 2020, there are not votes in the Senate for that. That does not have to be a permanent reality, that can change and the opinions of my colleagues can be changed. What I want to avoid is that colleagues be strongly against Puerto Rico’s statehood and then it is impossible to change their minds in the future. But I believe that the possibility of changing opinions exists. That’s what politics is about, that’s what debates are based on. So we have debates. I’ve seen people change their minds in the past but it’s going to take time.
“But that is very different from what the people of Puerto Rico decide to do through their plebiscite. That is a matter for the people to decide.”
RUBIO HABLA CON EL NUEVO DÍA
Miami, FL – El senador estadounidense Marco Rubio (R-FL) habló con El Nuevo Día sobre la estadidad de Puerto Rico. En el 2018, cuando la Comisionada Residente Jenniffer González-Colón introdujo el Acta de Admisión de Puerto Rico del 2018 el senador Rubio dijo:
“Apoyo el derecho de nuestros compatriotas en Puerto Rico en solicitar la admisión a la unión como un estado. Continuaré trabajando en nuestra estrategia para crear apoyo en el senado y crear las condiciones necesarias para alcanzar los 60 votos para ser exitosos”.
Estatidad de Puerto Rico
“Hay una gran diferencia entre Washington D.C. y Puerto Rico, por razones históricas. Los fundadores del país no querían que Washington D.C. fuera un estado, por qué querían que la sede del gobierno federal no tuviese influencia sobre el de un estado. Así que eso es muy distinto a la situación de Puerto Rico.
“Yo no estoy de acuerdo con cualquiera que diga que eso garantiza un resultado político que Puerto Rico automáticamente va a elegir a un demócrata al final del día. Y tercero, hay una diferencia entre un plebiscito un referéndum a nivel de Puerto Rico. Yo no tengo opinión sobre eso, eso es un tema local y lo debe decidir el pueblo de Puerto Rico a través de sus representantes electos.
“Lo que yo si he dicho es que en este momento no existen las condiciones de apoyo para un voto en el senado sobre eso. Pero eso no quiere decir que eso va a ser una cosa permanente. Como todo en la vida, las opiniones cambian, con nueva información y con nuevos hechos. Es importante que si eso es lo que el pueblo de Puerto Rico decide, pedir ser un estado, pues entonces abogar a favor de esa posición. Y yo creo que ayudaría muchísimo poder decir, mira Puerto Rico se está recuperando económicamente. Y es más, es un ejemplo de cómo la libre empresa puede ayudar a través de algunas de estas medidas que hemos hablado en esta entrevista.
“Así que es un tema que hay que trabajarlo. No es de un día al otro pero yo creo que es importante ser honesto: hoy, en este momento, a 27 de mayo del 2020 no existen los votos en el senado para eso. Eso no tiene que ser una realidad permanente, eso puede cambiar y la opiniones de mis colegas pueden cambiar. Lo que yo si quiero evitar es que colegas se cierren fuertemente en contra que Puerto Rico sea un estado y entonces sea imposible en el futuro cambiar su opinión. Pero yo creo que la posibilidad de cambiar la opinión existe. De eso se trata la política, en eso se basa el debate. Por eso hacemos debates. Yo he visto personas en el pasado cambiar de opinión pero va a tomar su tiempo.
“Pero eso es muy distinto a lo que decida hacer el pueblo de Puerto Rico a través de su plebiscito eso es un tema que debe decidir el pueblo”.
