Helping Bahamians rebuild is a matter of basic morality — and thwarts China, too

Not only have we lived through destructive hurricanes, but Bahamians are our friends, neighbors, and family members. The majority of Bahamian-Americans reside in the state of Florida, and our ties to their forebears’ nation remain a source of great cultural and economic nourishment.
The conditions on Abaco and Grand Bahama Islands are shocking. Communities look as if they have been flattened by a bomb, not a storm. With 70,000 Bahamians made homeless by the hurricane’s terrible power, the island nation is in urgent need of the kind of logistical assistance that only the U.S. Defense Department can offer. By devoting available military and medical assets to the effort, we have the ability to help our afflicted neighbors and family members and save Bahamian lives.
I am advocating these measures because directing resources to assist Bahamians is the right thing to do. But there exists an additional imperative on the security national level, as well: if we fail to rise to the occasion, China will step in to seize the moment and exploit the recovery for its own nefarious purposes.

By targeting the Bahamian government in this period of crisis, Beijing would be making the same opportunistic play to access critical foreign infrastructure.
But in this case, the national security threat is especially perilous, as it would give China a foothold just 50 miles from the coast of Florida.

Together, the U.S. and the Bahamas will rebuild those communities left reeling in the hurricane’s wake, and, as a result, we will only strengthen our mutual interests and long-standing relationship.

Para muchos de nosotros en el sur de Florida la devastación en las Bahamas, causada por el huracán Dorian, es un tema personal. Nuestra comunidad no solo ha vivido el paso de varios huracanes destructivos, sino que muchos consideramos a los bahameses nuestros amigos, vecinos y hasta familiares. La mayoría de los estadounidenses que son de las Bahamas residen en el estado de la Florida, y nuestros lazos bilaterales con las Bahamas siguen siendo una fuente de gran fortalecimiento cultural y económico.
Las condiciones en Gran Bahama y las islas Ábaco son realmente impactantes. Las comunidades parecen haber sido aplastadas por una bomba, no por una tormenta. Con decenas de miles de bahameños sin hogar por la terrible fuerza del huracán, la nación isleña necesita urgentemente del tipo de asistencia logística que solo el Departamento de Defensa de EEUU puede ofrecer. Al posicionar los recursos militares y médicos disponibles en este esfuerzo, tenemos la capacidad de ayudar a nuestros vecinos afectados por el huracán Dorian y salvar vidas en las Bahamas.
Estoy abogando por estas medidas porque el dirigir recursos para poder ayudar a los bahameños es lo correcto. Pero también existe una razón adicional en temas de nuestra seguridad nacional: si no estamos a la altura de la situación, China aprovechara la ocasión para explotar la recuperación de las Bahamas para su propio beneficio.

Al tener como objetivo al gobierno de las Bahamas durante este período de crisis, Beijing estaría haciendo el mismo juego oportunista de acceder a la infraestructura extranjera. Pero en este caso, la amenaza a la seguridad nacional es especialmente peligrosa, ya que le daría a China una base de apoyo a tan solo 50 millas de las costas de la Florida.
No podemos permitir que esto suceda. Depende de nosotros el tomar la iniciativa de ayudar al pueblo bahameño en su reconstrucción, la cual es de vida o muerte, como sólo EE. UU. y nuestro ejército pueden hacerlo, pero también para ser un aliado confiable a largo plazo.

Juntos, EEUU y las Bahamas reconstruirán esas comunidades que quedaron tambaleándose tras el paso del huracán Dorian y, como resultado, solo fortaleceremos nuestros intereses mutuos y nuestra relación.
