VIDEO: Rubio Slams Obama Administration’s Failure to Sanction Chinese Companies Aiding North Korea
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, today criticized the Obama Administration for failing to implement mandatory sanctions against Chinese companies, calling State Department officials’ excuses an “absurd” effort to “toe the company line.”
Although Congress mandated sanctions in the North Korea Sanctions and Policy Enhancement Act, which became law in February, Rubio said the Obama Administration is “afraid to press the case against too many Chinese companies.” He also questioned the State Department’s refusal to respond to a public report listing several Chinese companies acting on behalf of a designated North Korean financial institution.
Rubio’s remarks came during today’s Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity Policy hearing on North Korea, which featured Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Russel and the State Department’s Coordinator for Sanctions Policy Daniel Fried.
