Feb 17, 2012 | Blog

On Wednesday, Senator Rubio sponsored four amendments and co-sponsored two amendments to legislation reauthorizing our nation’s transportation programs (or “to the transportation bill” or “to MAP-21, the transportation bill”).

Senator Rubio’s amendments were:

  • S.AMDT.1628, Evacuation Routes, requires each State to give adequate consideration to the needs of evacuation routes in the State when allocating funds for the construction of highways.

  • S.AMDT.1629, Prohibition on Funding requires that none of the funds made available under this bill can be used to build and put up signs indicating that a project is funded under this bill.

  • S.AMDT.1658, Streamlining Transportation Projects, allows the Secretary of Transportation to designate one transportation agency as the lead agency for multimodal transportation projects for the purposes of project reviews, authorizations, and funding, so the project’s sponsor does not have to deal with multiple federal agencies.

  • S.AMDT.1659, Project Justification and Transparency, requires the Secretary of Transportation to explain why projects were selected under the Projects of National and Regional Significance program, a new $1 billion program for large transportation infrastructure projects created under this bill.

Senator Rubio was a co-sponsor to:

  • S.AMDT.1642, Program to Assist Veterans to Acquire Commercial Driver’s Licenses. ,requires the  Secretary of Transportation to establish accelerated procedures to enable qualified veterans to more quickly acquire a Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDL).

  • S.AMDT.1662, Resources and Ecosystems Sustainability, Tourist Opportunities, and Revived Economies of the Gulf Coast States Act of 2012, would dedicate 80 percent of Clean Water Act fines from the 2010 BP oil spill to support continued environmental and economic restoration for the Gulf States, including Florida.
