Jul 9, 2012 | Press Releases

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), the ranking member of the Senate’s Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Peace Corps and Global Narcotics Affairs, spoke with Mexico’s President-elect Enrique Peña Nieto about his victory and issued the following statement regarding Mexico’s presidential election:

“This afternoon I congratulated President-elect Enrique Peña Nieto on his election to serve as the next President of Mexico. I also commended the people of Mexico, as well as the government of President Calderón, for demonstrating their democratic commitment by conducting free and fair elections. This is a historic opportunity for Mexico, as it has undergone a remarkable economic and political transformation in the last two decades.

“Whether it is ensuring that our robust security partnership stays a step ahead of organized crime, taking the steps necessary to ensure the freer flow of energy resources throughout the continent or protecting the democratic commitment of our hemisphere, a formidable set of challenges and opportunities lie ahead. I’m committed to working with my Senate colleagues on a full set of measures for a more democratic, safe and prosperous future for our respective peoples and the hemisphere.”
