Senator Rubio Applauds Invitation to Include Mexico in Trans-Pacific Partnership
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere Affairs, issued the following statement regarding today’s announcement of the invitation for Mexico to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations:
“Especially over the past decade, many Latin American nations have emerged as examples of the prosperity, security and opportunities that take root when free enterprise is embraced. By strengthening trade relationships with our partners in the Americas, we have helped strengthen democracies and created new consumers for U.S. products and services.
“Mexico’s inclusion in Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations is a welcome step that will ultimately help strengthen the friendship and economic ties that bind our nations. Mexico’s participation in TPP will further promote the priorities of the Americas and more strongly grow the economies of the United States and our Pacific allies.
“The TPP is a promising trade agreement that I believe will provide immediate benefits once it’s finalized and can eventually serve as the basis for creating a hemisphere-wide free-trade zone. My hope is that Canada and Japan will soon be included in these negotiations as well.”
Earlier this year, Rubio urged President Obama to support Mexico’s inclusion in TPP negotiations.
