Rubio Welcomes New Sanctions Against Hezbollah, Calls For More

Jan 7, 2016 | Press Releases

Washington, D.C. U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) welcomed today’s announcement by the U.S. Department of the Treasury that ‎it is imposing sanctions on Hezbollah member and financier Ali Youssef Charara and his telecommunications company, Spectrum Investment Group Holding SAL.

Today’s sanctions follow December’s enactment into law of the Hezbollah International Financing Prevention Act, legislation sponsored by Rubio.

“These financial sanctions are an important step to crack down on Iran’s terrorist proxy Hezbollah by denying them critical financing they need to carry out their plots against America, Israel and our allies throughout the world,” said Rubio. “The disastrous nuclear deal with Iran will provide billions of dollars to Tehran that can be used to increase support for Hezbollah at a time when its leaders’ threatening rhetoric toward Israel and efforts to sow chaos throughout the Middle East are only increasing.

“I am pleased that the Hezbollah International Financing Prevention Act of 2015 that I sponsored in the Senate provides the Obama Administration with enhanced authorities to go after Hezbollah,” added Rubio. “I encourage the administration to implement the Hezbollah International Financing Prevention Act of 2015 to its fullest extent immediately.”
