Rubio Welcomes Additional F-35 Fighter Jets at Eglin Air Force Base

Jun 14, 2021 | Press Releases

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) welcomed the U.S. Air Force’s announcement that Eglin Air Force Base (AFB) will be the location for a second F-35A Squadron, doubling the number of F-35 fighter jets at the base from 24 to 48. From his position on the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Rubio has continuously supported the F-35 program, securing key funding for the program over the years, and has encouraged the U.S. Air Force to prioritize Florida bases for F-35 basing decisions. On May 9, 2019, the U.S. Air Force announced Eglin AFB as a preferred location for a second F-35 squadron.

“Today’s announcement is a big win for Northwest Florida and our nation’s military readiness,” Rubio said. “The men and women who bravely serve our country at Eglin Air Force Base are on the front lines of maintaining U.S. air superiority against near-peer adversaries such as Russia and China. We must continue to modernize our armed forces and ensure we are ready for any situation.”
