Rubio to Host Uyghur Human Rights Activist and Florida’s Lt. Governor as His Guests for State of the Union
Washington, D.C — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) will host prominent Uyghur human rights activist Rushan Abbas and Florida’s Lieutenant Governor, Jeanette Núñez, as his guests to President Trump’s State of the Union Address on Tuesday evening. Rubio has repeatedly condemned the mass internment of an estimated 1.8 million ethnic Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslim minorities in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. As the Senior Senator for the State of Florida, Rubio will also welcome and host Florida’s Lieutenant Governor as his guest.
“I’m honored to host and welcome Rushan Abbas and Lt. Governor Jeanette Núñez as my guests for tomorrow’s State of the Union address, a great tradition of our nation’s democracy,” Rubio said. “Rushan is a leading voice in the defense of Uyghurs’ human rights. As a result of her work, her sister, Dr. Gulshan Abbas, was believed to have been forcibly disappeared and detained in a camp in Xinjiang. As the Founder and Executive Director of Campaign for Uyghurs, Rushan has tirelessly raised awareness of the atrocities taking place in Xinjiang at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.
“Lt. Governor Jeanette Núñez, Florida’s First Hispanic Female Lieutenant Governor, continues to serve Floridians in this capacity following years of dedicated service in the Florida House of Representatives,” Rubio continued. “Lt. Governor Núñez, a native of South Florida, has been leading Florida’s cybersecurity Task Force efforts as well as a strong voice in support of human trafficking awareness. I look forward to continuing to work with her and Governor DeSantis’s administration on behalf of all Floridians.”
Rubio is the Cochair of the bipartisan and bicameral Congressional-Executive Commission on China and a member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
