English/Español: Rubio Slams Student Debt Bailout, Offers Zero Interest Rate Alternative
President Joe Biden announced plans to forgive student loan debt––up to $20,000 per borrower––and another extension of the COVID-era pause on payment requirements, despite more than 10 million job openings across the country.
- “Forgiving student loan debt isn’t free. It means the 85 percent of Americans with no undergraduate debt from college will be carrying the burden for those that do. That is not a relief, it is an unfair burden to place on working families.
- “There are better ways to help borrowers with surging interest rates and staggering debt. My LOAN Act would increase transparency and eliminate interest rates in the federal student loan industry. Congress should pass it immediately.” – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL)
Sen. Rubio’s LOAN Act would eliminate interest on federal student loans and replace it with a one-time, non-compounding origination fee paid back over the lifetime of the loan. Income-based repayment plans would also be the default.
