Rubio, Representative Díaz-Balart, Commissioner Bovo Secure Federal Grant for Miami-Dade County
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), U.S. Representative Mario Díaz-Balart (R-FL), and Miami-Dade County Commissioner Esteban Bovo, Jr. issued statements after the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced a $9.5 million Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant award for Miami-Dade County’s South Dade Transitway Park-and-Ride Improvement project. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Rubio secured funding for DOT’s BUILD grant program that will enhance infrastructure across Florida.
“I’m pleased to see that the Department of Transportation has awarded a grant for the Miami-Dade Park & Ride Improvement project,” Rubio said. “This funding is an important step in the implementation of the SMART Plan, and will improve two park-and-ride facilities by resurfacing an existing parking lot, constructing additional sidewalks to improve pedestrian access, and creating additional parking spaces to increase availability and comfort for visitors.”
“As House Appropriations Transportation Subcommittee Chairman, I am grateful to be in a position to bring much-needed dollars home,” Representative Díaz-Balart said. “The County has finally taken real, tangible steps forward with the SMART Plan over the last several months. By working with the Administration, we have secured the first federal funding to compliment the implementation of that plan. This BUILD grant for Miami-Dade County will help support the continued growth and expansion of the South-Dade Transitway corridor, as it continues to move through the project development stage at the Federal Transit Administration. Specifically, the grant will help increase capacity at two park-and-ride facilities along the corridor, directly supporting the County TPO’s vote to move toward bus-rapid transit. Expanding transit in our community is critical to alleviating the traffic and gridlock that we face daily. I thank Secretary Chao for continuing to invest in our community’s transportation sector, and I look forward to continue working with her, Senator Rubio, Commissioner Bovo, and other local elected officials to expand Southern Florida’s transit systems and will keep fighting for the funds necessary to do so.”
“I would like to thank Senator Marco Rubio, Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart, Secretary Elaine Chao and all of our federal partners in helping to deliver transportation solutions in Miami-Dade County” said Chairman Bovo. “The $9.5 Million BUILD Award will further enhance the South Dade transit way, a SMART Plan corridor the Miami-Dade Transpiration Planning Organization (TPO) has placed into priority status. With the much needed improvements funded, Miami-Dade residents will begin to experience improved transit infrastructure and relief from traffic.”
Miami-Dade County BUILD Grant Award:
South Dade Transitway Park-and-Ride Improvements: $9.5 million to improve 2 park and ride facilities at the existing park and ride locations of SW 152 St. and SW 168 St. by upgrading the existing surface lots to park garages with additional pedestrian access; drop-off area; disabled, bicycle, carpool and electric vehicle parking; charging stations; bike sharing; and multimodal center.
