Rubio Encouraged By Announcement Of Third Hearing On Immigration Bill

Apr 18, 2013 | Press Releases

Washington, D.C. – Earlier today, the Joint Economic Committee – which consists of members of the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives to evaluate the economic impact of public policies being considered in Congress – announced that it will hold a hearing on S. 744, the “Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013.”

After the announcement, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued the following statement:

“I am encouraged that another committee will hold a hearing to examine the economic impact of the immigration legislation.  We need more transparency and greater scrutiny of this bill as the process continues, and it’s important for this particular committee to look at how this bill helps our economy and encourages job creation, as well as ways we can improve it that will further help American workers find better job opportunities.

“I believe this immigration policy will be a net benefit for America, because immigration has always been a net benefit for America. For example, up to 40 percent of American Fortune 500 firms were started by immigrants. This doesn’t just lead to corner office executive-level jobs; this generates jobs across the income spectrum that help Americans rise to the middle class and beyond, to say nothing of the self-starting immigrants who open up small businesses like the ones I see everywhere I look when I’m home in Miami.

“I am also confident hearings like this will help put to rest the notion that immigration is a drain on our society and will foster greater government dependency.  As conservatives, we’ve always believed any serious policy cost analysis must account for the positive benefits of any policy – the same way tax cut ‘scores’ must account for revenue inevitably generated from economic growth. Not only does this legislation’s prohibitions on federal benefits for illegal immigrants and strengthened public charge standards prevent them from straining our budget, the modernization of our immigration system to a more merit-based system will help us prioritize recruitment of immigrant entrepreneurs, innovators, investors, skilled workers and people driven by the desire to build a better life for themselves and their children. It’s why conservative economists say the bill will generate trillions in new economic growth and create jobs that will benefit working class Americans.”
