Rubio Calls On Obama Administration To Immediately Pursue Extradition Of Recaptured Drug Lord “El Chapo”
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues, issued the following statement today regarding the Mexican government’s announcement that drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has been recaptured:
“‘El Chapo’s’ recapture is a victory in the fight against the drug cartels that traffic drugs, terrorize the public, and poison the rule of law and democratic order that many generations of Mexicans have worked to achieve. His escape was a serious blow to all those working in good faith within the Mexican government, law enforcement and judiciary to give that nation a better future, and I am pleased to hear he is once again in custody.
“The Obama Administration should immediately pursue ‘El Chapo’s’ extradition in accordance with our treaty with Mexico. Not only is he wanted for major crimes in the U.S., but we have the capabilities to bring him to justice.
“Given that ‘El Chapo’ has already escaped from Mexican prison twice, this third opportunity to bring him to justice cannot be squandered. We can’t afford to wait for the Obama Administration to take action to bring him to justice. In fact, if the Obama Administration has not already laid the groundwork for this moment, they will have already dropped the ball.”
