Miami, FL — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) released a statement after U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo denied Florida’s request for disaster assistance after its fisheries were harmed by severe red tide events. Earlier this month, Rubio led colleagues in sending a letter to Secretary Raimondo urging that the Department approve Florida’s request. Despite notifying congressional offices of the decision, the Department did not provide a justification for the denial of the disaster request.
“In August 2018, I witnessed the destruction of the red tide event firsthand, as well as its impact on countless Floridians up and down the Gulf Coast,” Rubio said. “The Biden Administration’s assertion that the red tides of 2018 and 2019 do not amount to a fisheries disaster is insulting, and it appears to be a blatantly political move — one that risks severe consequences for the economies of the communities directly impacted. Secretary Raimondo’s determination runs counter to common sense and shows a complete disregard for the devastating losses experienced by many Floridians in recent years due to these events.”

Miami, FL — El senador estadounidense Marco Rubio (R-FL) emitió un comunicado tras la decisión de la Secretaría de Comercio de EE.UU Gina Raimondo, de rechazar la solicitud de asistencia por desastre de la Florida después que sus pesquerías se vieron perjudicadas por la grave marea roja.
A principios de este mes, Rubio lideró una carta junto a varios colegas instando a la secretaria Raimondo a que el Departamento de Comercio aprobase la solicitud de la Florida. A pesar de notificar a las oficinas del Congreso de la decisión, el Departamento no proporcionó una justificación para la denegación de la solicitud de desastre.
“En agosto del 2018, vi de primera mano la destrucción causada por la marea roja, así como su impacto a muchos floridanos a lo largo de la costa del Golfo”, Rubio dijo. “La afirmación de la administración Biden que la marea roja en los años 2018 y 2019 no equivalen a un desastre pesquero es insultante y parece ser un movimiento descaradamente político, uno que corre el riesgo de tener consecuencias graves para las economías de las comunidades que fueron directamente afectadas. La determinación de la secretaría Raimondo va en contra del sentido común y muestra un total desprecio por las devastadoras pérdidas que sufrieron muchos floridanos en los últimos años a causa de estos eventos”.
