Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), Tom Cotton (R-AR), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), and Senate colleagues introduced the Campus Free Speech Resolution of 2021 and Campus Free Speech Restoration Act.

The Campus Free Speech Resolution of 2021 urges greater First Amendment protection at public universities. The Campus Free Speech Restoration Act would protect the First Amendment rights of students at public universities from improperly restrictive speech-codes. “Students should never be silenced for expressing their ideas and beliefs,” Rubio said. “Limiting free speech on college campuses is not only dangerous, it is un-American. I will continue to protect Americans against the radical crusade the Left is waging on this constitutionally-afforded right.”

Background:

  • A 2020 Gallup-Knight Foundation study revealed that eighty-one percent of students support a campus environment where students are exposed to all types of speech, even if they may find it offensive.
  • A 2019 poll conducted by Young America’s Foundation revealed that forty-six percent of students stopped themselves from sharing their ideas in the classroom.
