U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) applauded the Senate’s passage of their resolution designating September 17-24, 2022 as National Estuaries Week.
- Estuaries are partially enclosed coastal bodies of water where freshwater from rivers and streams mixes with saltwater from the ocean. They make up only 13 percent of U.S. land area but are vital to the environment and economy.
- Florida is home to four designated national estuaries: Tampa Bay, Sarasota Bay, Indian River Lagoon, and Coastal and Heartland national estuary programs. The health of Florida’s estuary ecosystems depends on clean water and balanced salinities.
