Fighting for Florida

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today issued the following statement regarding his vote against final passage of the Senate’s farm bill:

“While I support some provisions in this legislation, its overall cost of nearly $1 trillion is more than we can afford at a time when our debt stands at over $15 trillion and keeps growing fast. It's also unfortunate that all Senate Democrats sided with labor unions over workers by rejecting the RAISE Act, which would allow workers to earn more money for a job well done without having to first clear it by union bosses."

Earlier this year, Rubio introduced the Rewarding Achievement and Incentivizing Successful Employees (RAISE) Act, which would amend the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) Act provision that blocks employers from giving deserving employees merit-based raises or bonuses. Under the current law, almost 8 million Americans who are union members have capped salaries, making them ineligible for merit-based pay raises and bonuses without union approval.

I want to take this opportunity to congratulate all the fathers across the State of Florida and the country for the important role that they play. I lost my father almost two years ago, but with every day that goes by, I learn more and more about how important an influence he has been in my life.

Two-hundred and thirty-seven years ago today, the Army of the United States was officially formed to defend our fledgling country from Britain’s advancing force of seasoned regulars. Our first commander-in-chief, General George Washington, took command of this volunteer unit and proceeded to win a hard-fought war for independence, setting the conditions for what has become the greatest nation on earth.

Since that fateful June day in 1775, our Army has continuously answered the call to defend our ideals and way of life, suffering losses and enduring hardships along the way; but ultimately representing the best of this country and carrying forth the banner of liberty and freedom to those that are oppressed. Deployed across the globe in support of peacekeeping, humanitarian and contingency operations, this professional force remains tireless and is seen the world over as a symbol of excellence.

I am truly honored to celebrate this 237th Army Birthday with all of you and I am privileged to recognize the sacrifices and accomplishments of such a storied branch of our Armed Forces.

On behalf of the people of the great state of Florida, thank you for your service and Army Strong!
Senator Rubio is an original co-sponsor of S.RES.489, a resolution that calls for the appointment of an outside special counsel to investigate the recent national security leaks from the Obama administration. The recent leaks of classified and highly sensitive information on US intelligence operations present a grave threat to our nation’s national security interests.
The sugar industry is an important job creator in Florida and across the country, one that is capable of competing with anyone in the world if the playing field is level. Unfortunately, the global sugar trade is not a level playing field as our foreign competitors not only create their own trade barriers but also operate with fewer regulations, fewer union commitments and meager pay.

As a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio traveled to the U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to conduct oversight of the facility, tour the base, and meet with the commander of Joint Task Force Guantanamo Bay.
To stop this from happening again Senator Marco Rubio cosponsored a bipartisan bill, the Dignified Burial of Veterans Act of 2012, to ensure veterans without known next of kin are provided with a proper burial. ABC Orlando reported from the Florida National Cemetery's Memorial Day service this weekend:

This Memorial Day, I join my fellow Floridians in celebrating the bravery and heroism of our servicemen and women, both past and present, who honorably answer the call in defense of liberty. For me it is a distinct honor to work in the Senate on behalf of all of our veterans who today continue the legacy of those we have lost.
There is one thing that every great American company has in common: each began as a small business. Starting a small business in America means you are willing to risk whatever money you can cobble together from your life savings or maxing out a credit card to pursue your dream.
