Newly Sponsored Legislation
Senator Rubio is a cosponsor of S.19, a bill titled the American Liberty Restoration Act. This bill aims to restore the liberty of all Americans by striking the newly passed mandate requiring that private citizens purchase health insurance. Senator Rubio believes that ObamaCare will have disastrous consequences on our economy by raising taxes on individuals and small businesses. As he recently wrote in the Orlando Sentinel, “For millions of Americans, including job creators, Obama’s political win is now an IRS problem for them in the real world.” Senator Rubio’s cosponsorship of this bill is a big step toward striking down the individual mandate and repealing ObamaCare.
Senator Rubio is the sponsor of S.RES.521, a resolution designating September 2012 as National Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month. Millions around the world are living with traumatic spinal cord injuries as well as the knowledge that there is currently no cure for their debilitating condition. Every 48 minutes someone is paralyzed due to a spinal cord injury. This is the second consecutive year that Senator Rubio has worked to promote awareness of this serious issue by designating September as Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month. Senator Rubio’s intent is to promote conversation about the devastation of paralysis and to bring spinal cord injury to the forefront of public awareness.
Senator Rubio is an original cosponsor of S.3380, a bill to provide for the issuance of a Victory for Veterans stamp, and for other purposes. This bill, which is modeled on the successful Victory Stamp drive of World War II, will create a special stamp known as a semipostal that will raise funds for employment and training programs for veterans. Senator Rubio believes that this bill, which allows the public to give back to those who have served our nation, will honor the more than 20 million veterans currently living in the United States.
Senator Rubio is an original cosponsor of S.AMDT.2547, an amendment to ObamaCare that would allow individuals to use a Flexible Savings Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) to purchase over the counter medications without a prescription, a practice that is currently prohibited under this harmful and restrictive legislation. Approximately 10 million Americans have HSAs and 35 million have FSAs to help reduce personal health care costs and provide greater flexibility in important health care decisions. Unfortunately, these accounts cannot be used for certain basic pharmaceutical needs due to President Obama’s overreaching health care law. This amendment is a step toward removing the harmful effects of ObamaCare and restoring the rights of individuals and families to make their own health care decisions.
Senator Rubio is a cosponsor of S.AMDT.2491, an amendment on the Small Business Jobs and Tax Relief Act. This amendment would preserve the current tax policy through the end of 2013, during which time the Senate Finance Committee would undertake comprehensive tax reform. Senator Rubio believes that we must protect our nation’s small businesses from crushing tax increases that threaten their ability to grow and create jobs. The last thing our economy needs is to burden the millions of small businesses that currently stand on the front lines of job creation and economic recovery.
