MEDIA ADVISORY: Rubio To Visit Daytona Beach To Discuss Manufacturing & Recreational Fishing As Pillars Of Florida

Aug 1, 2016 | Press Releases

Washington, D.C. Tomorrow, August 2, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) will visit Daytona Beach to tour Costa Del Mar’s headquarters and discuss the importance of manufacturing and recreational fishing as key pillars of Florida’s economy. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 37 percent of all recreational fishing trips in the U.S. last year were taken in Florida, making the state particularly sensitive to regulatory decisions impacting it.

Rubio is a co-sponsor of S. 3099, the “Access to Sportfishing Act of 2016”, which U.S. Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) sponsored and that the Senate commerce committee passed in late June. It awaits action by the full Senate. If enacted, it would ify the proposed closure within Biscayne National Park and stipulate that any closure must first require a fishery management plan to be developed, using the best available science, in formal consultation with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and be based on fishery conservation and management.

Rubio is also an original co-sponsor of S. 2807, the “Preserving Public Access to Public Waters Act”, which would require a state’s fish and wildlife agency to coordinate and approve any closure to the public’s access to marine waters of the National Park Service.

Additionally, as Chairman of the Commerce Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries and Coast Guard, Rubio has spearheaded efforts to hold the U.S. Department of Commerce accountable for its decision to close the South Atlantic red snapper fishery for two consecutive years. His most recent effort came in late June when he requested that the department’s inspector general review this decision.

After touring the facility, Rubio will hold a media availability.
