ICYMI: Rubio on America’s Newsroom
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) joined America’s Newsroom to discuss Speaker Pelosi’s shameful comment that Senate Republicans are “getting away with murder” on police reform legislation, Senate Democrats blocking the GOP policing reform bill, the damage to the credibility of the FBI in the investigation of General Michael Flynn, and former Vice President Joe Biden’s potential knowledge of an investigation into General Michael Flynn. See below for highlights and watch the full interview here.
On Speaker Pelosi’s shameful comment that Senate Republicans are “getting away with murder” on police reform legislation:
“I think it’s the kind of comment that if I made or someone on my side of the aisle made about something, there would be non-stop wall-to-wall coverage… Mr. Floyd was tragically murdered by a police department in a city that’s been in the control of the Democrat Party for a long time. In fact, in many of these communities where we’ve seen these police incidents, it’s Democrat mayors and Democrat leaders on the councils and commissions that have run these cities for decades, as [Senator] Tim Scott pointed out yesterday. They could’ve banned chokeholds a long time ago.”
On Senate Democrats blocking police reform legislation:
“The second thing I find ironic is [Democrats] are criticizing [Senator] Tim Scott’s bill for not doing what their bill doesn’t do either. Their bill puts these bans on federal agencies, but it does nothing to even try to influence in real ways what local governments would do.
“Look, this is very simple. This is politics, OK. [Democrats] do not want a bill to pass. What they want to do is pass a House bill and then basically create this three or four month charade arguing that Republicans are standing in the way of it because it’s a key part of their electoral strategy. They are not, on an issue like this, going to allow movement on a bill because they want the issue for the campaign. That’s what’s happening here. It’s clear to everybody…
“This should not be a partisan issue — they want it to be a partisan issue because they see a benefit to it. But it should not be. There is nothing more un-American than racial discrimination and racial inequality, and we should address it. And the only way to address it is for everyone in America to say we want to deal with it because it impacts all of us, whether it does directly or indirectly. All of us are hurt by a country where a significant percentage of Americans feel that their lives do not matter as much and their issues are not dealt with because of the color of their skin.
“But at least for the next few months, and certainly for many years before now, the Democrat Party has made a decision that this is something they want as an issue, not as something they would like to solve.”
On the damage to the credibility of the FBI in the investigation of General Michael Flynn:
“It is not just about politics here. When we have an election, there is a peaceful transition of power which is critical to the success of our republic… This is an FBI and Justice Department matter and it’s the right place for them to examine it…
“It undermines the credibility of these agencies. It does tremendous damage to the credibility of really important agencies for our country, particularly the FBI, who we rely on every single day to go after not just criminals, but to protect our country from espionage and terrorism. These people, starting with Comey on down, have done extraordinary damage to the reputation and credibility of an agency which I think is unfair to the thousands of men and women who don’t play politics in those agencies and every single day show up and do their job.”
On former Vice President Joe Biden’s potential knowledge of an investigation into General Michael Flynn:
“I think ultimately, if all this proves to be true, then there’s really only two things to conclude from it. Either A, he’s suffering from severe memory loss, or B, he’s not being honest, he’s lying. So, we’ll find out soon enough when the Judiciary Committee does its investigation right in front of the American people.”
