Following Advocacy from Rubio, Red Snapper Fall Season Receives Preliminary Approval
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today applauded the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council’s approval of a plan to open recreational red snapper fishing in federal waters after a total of only 17 days in the previous seven years combined. The plan now awaits final approval from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Rubio and Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) had previously called for the red snapper fishery to open as soon as possible.
“Abundant and sustainable fishing opportunities are vital to Florida’s economy,” said Rubio. “For many years, from Jacksonville to the Florida Keys, fishermen and small business owners alike on the east coast have been burdened by the federal red snapper fishery closure. I applaud the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council’s recommendation and urge NOAA to swiftly approve a plan that will benefit thousands of Floridians and offer long overdue and much-needed data on red snapper populations for future management planning throughout the South Atlantic.”
