Español/English: Rubio on Meeting With Venezuelan Delegation
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued the following statement after he met with the Venezuelan Ambassador to the United States, Carlos Vecchio, and delegation members of the Interim Venezuelan government.
“I want to thank the delegation members of the Venezuelan interim government for meeting with me and Senator Menendez to discuss the ongoing situation in their beloved homeland,” Rubio said. “As the situation in Venezuela continues to deteriorate, we must remain vigilant. Maduro has a long track record of manipulating negotiations to his advantage, gaining international legitimacy, and dividing the opposition. The U.S. must stay the course until democracy is fully restored, free and fair elections are scheduled, and all political prisoners and other prisoners of conscience are released. Only then should we entertain any conversations or consider the removal of direct sanctions against members of the narco-regime.”
Rubio is the Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues.
