Across our country, law enforcement officers don’t just police their communities; they are their communities. They wake up each morning and say goodbye to their families before going to work. They greet their neighbors on the street. They protect city blocks they know like the back of their hand.
Unfortunately, their jobs aren’t getting any easier. On average, a law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty every 54 hours in America.
In Florida, we lost 17 of our officers this way last year. Each one of them died working to protect their community, and each left behind grieving families and friends. And while we cannot bring them back, I’d like to honor each of them:
Major Aubrey Travis Johnson, Jr., Miami Police Department;
Sgt. Eric John Twisdale, Clay County Sheriff’s Office;
Deputy Sheriff Angela Dinece Chavers, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office;
Deputy Sheriff Maurice Che’valier Ford, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office;
Detention Deputy Charles Otis Pugh, II, Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office;
Lt. Aldemar Rengifo, Jr., Broward County Sheriff’s Office;
Lt. Christopher Michael Cunningham, Sr., Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office;
Correctional Officer Jairo Antonio Bravo, Miami-Dade Corrections & Rehabilitation Dept.;
Correctional Officer Robert Wayne Rogers, Florida Department of Corrections;
Sgt. Corey Pendergrass, Lauderhill Police Department;
Master Detention Deputy Richard Mark Barry, Lake County Sheriff’s Office;
Master Detention Deputy Lynn D. Jones, Lake County Sheriff’s Office;
Officer Julian L. Keen, Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission;
Sgt. Jose Antonio Diaz-Ayala, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office;
Deputy Sheriff Shannon Santo Bennett, Broward County Sheriff’s Office;
Trooper Joseph Jon Bullock, Florida Highway Patrol; and
Officer Paul Patrick Dunn, Lakeland Police Department.
We thank all of these heroic men and women for their service to our state.
And I thank police officers all across our country for the risks they take every single day out of duty to their communities.
