Strengthening Immigration Reform: Committee Passes Two Amendments Enhancing Student Visa Tracking

May 14, 2013 | Comunicados de Prensa

Grassley amendments will “improve student and exchange visitor visa programs” and provide for “real-time transmission of data from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System to databases used by U.S. Customs and Border Protection” (Amendment 69; Amendment 77)

CONCERN WITH ORIGINAL BILL: After the Boston Marathon terrorist bombing, many were concerned regulations and tracking programs for those here on student visas were not stringent enough and not addressed in the immigration bill.

  • Senator Chuck Grassley: “Given the events of this week, it’s important for us to understand the gaps and loopholes in our immigration system. … [I]t will help shed light on the weaknesses of our system.” (Elise Foley, “Chuck Grassley Ties Boston Bombings To Immigration Reform,” Huffington Post, 4/19/13)

HOW THE AMENDMENTS STRENGTHEN THE BILL: To improve the current legal immigration system the amendments – Grassley 69 y Grassley 77 – will improve the current student visas and tracking systems. Grassley 69  will enhance the Student Visa Tracking System as well as requiring accreditation of schools those here on student visas are attending. Grassley 77 will provide real-time transmission of data from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System to databases used by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, an important improvement in an enforcement tool.
